Baskerville Society Committee member, and a PhD student considering the bindings of John Baskerville
Aurelie has recently embarked on a PhD which will consider Baskerville’s bindings. The full title of her work is Bindings of Baskerville: study of the bindings found on John Baskerville’s editions in the British Isles and abroad (eighteenth-nineteenth century). Aurélie is a PhD candidate in Ligatus Research Centre, University of the Arts – London and her work is funded by the AHRC (TECHNE grant).
The overall aim of her research is to study the different types of bindings found on John Baskerville’s editions from a material perspective. The material study of the bindings will therefore help us understand the market for Baskerville’s editions by studying how they were bound during his lifetime and shortly after, whether in cheap structures or highly decorated bindings, and how far in the British Isles and abroad they can be found, showing the impact and reception of his printing work.
