2016 is the 850th anniversary of the awarding of the market charter to Peter de Bermingham in 1166.

To mark this as the beginning of Birmingham as a town and a commercial entity, Professor Carl Chinn and Dr Malcolm Dick are editing a new history of Birmingham, published by Liverpool University Press in 2016.  Following the success of other publication marking key anniversaries, such as Liverpool 800 and Belfast 400, this is intended to be a major source of historical reference for the city. Caroline Archer’s contribution to the volume, ‘Printed in Birmingham’, will explore the development of printing and print culture in the city.
