Narrated by: Dr Caroline Archer; Produced by: Swift Professional Audio; On behalf of: History West Midlands

Matthew Boulton’s family Baskerville Bible is an integral part of Birmingham’s history, a rare piece of typographic heritage, and an item of national significance. In January 2020, it was announced that the Boulton family Bible, printed by John Baskerville in Cambridge in 1763, had been placed for auction in London by the Birmingham Assay Office who had owed the Bible since 1986. This recording reflects on the events around the sale and purchase of the Bible, its significance to Birmingham’s heritage and its importance to the international typographic and bibliographic communities.
