‘Reading Magazines’ day at St Bride Foundation at part of the London Design Festival 18 September
The programme for Reading Magazines: 300 Years of Magazine Evolution is now in place.
The event is being organised by Steve Watson at Stack Magazines and will take place at the legendary St Bride Foundation, just off Fleet Street, on Friday 18 September. This is part of the London Design Festival over two weeks across the capital.
The speakers will examine three centuries of magazines, from The Gentleman’s Magazine – the first periodical to call itself a magazine, according to Dr Johnson’s Dictionary – through an elite media suppressed by stamp duties and then a century of mass media, to the fabulous landscape of today’s multifarious independent magazines amid the bottomless pit of digital media.
Yours truly, Magforum founder Tony Quinn, will kick off the day with a whistlestop tour of the first 250 years of magazine publishing;
Sharon Maxwell Magnus will explore the cultural importance of women’s magazines since the 1960s;
Scott King on his time at i-D and Sleazenation, and his art projects since then;
Charlie Baker and Mathias Clottu from The Fence on borrowing ideas from great magazines of the past;
Lucy Roeber and Frith Kerr from the Erotic Review will be interviewed by Stack founder Steven Watson about working in a restrictive digital age;
Meara Sharma on subverting the conventions of magazines at Elastic;
and Alice Sherwin and Harry Bennett on their work for the ‘willfully problematising’Pilot.
